This songs on this album are songs mostly from their album Elva and some are new that were previously unreleased (Before I Go, Cailin, and Shallow). This album is them playing live in Yellowstone, so I think the title Music In High Places is appropriate. This was the first Unwritten Law cd I ever bought. I started liking them after I heard Seein' Red (which is on this album) and I fell in love with their music when I saw them open for 311 at the 311 concert I went to this year. This album is an all-acoustic album, even the bass guitar is acoustic. It sounds really cool especially when you have three acoustic guitars playing the same riff, I think it sounds pretty cool. This album is a pretty good album to listen to if you want something kind of laid back; except for a few songs (Blame It On Me and Rescue Me for example).
1. Before I Go- This song is one of the more laid back songs on the album. It has a really catchy verse that transits from verse to chorus to bridge really well. I'd say that the highlight of this song is the lyrics. I thought that they were well thought out. Good song. 4/5
2. Rest Of My Life- This is one of my favorites on the album. It opens with a really cool little guitar riff that's played acoustic on this album and its original album. This version of this song sounds kind of something you might hear from Jack Johnson or one of those more laid back artists. The lyrics transist from the chorus to the verse VERY well in this one. "I can't have you leave for the rest of my; life's the only thing that deal's the pain..." 5/5
3. Seein' Red- This song was the first song that really introduced me to Unwritten Law. Although I prefer the Elva version of this song, this version is still very good. A lot of you have probably already heard this song on the radio. It's kind of soft throughout the verses and gets harder during the chorus. My favorite thing about this song is the guitar parts. The guitar in this song is genious. 4.5/5
4. Up All Night- I used to not really like this song until I heard it live, now it's one of my favorites. The acoustic version of this song once again isn't as good as the original version in my opinion, but it's still pretty good. The chorus in this song is like most Unwritten Law choruses; kind of hard, good vocals...generic Unwritten Law). The verse in this song is a bit different from most other songs you might hear from them. It's a bit harder and has just kind of a different feel to it. 4/5
5. Blame It On Me- This is one of the harder songs on this album. Personally, hard and acoustic don't really mix well for me, so I never really cared for this song. It's a good one, I don't skip it when I listen to the album, but I don't like it as much as the others. 3.5/5
6. Geronimo- I love this song. It's one of their softer songs. It kind of has a bit of a sad feel until you get to the chorus. The chorus is a little more upbeat. This song is one of their more pop type songs, but it's still good. Good song. 4.5/5
7. Cailin- This is either my favorite song on the album, or one of my favorites. The guitar in this song is awesome. The song is about Scott's daughter Cailin. There is a little solo near the end of the song that sounds great. There are barely any flaws in this song. I think that this is one of the best songs I've ever heard by them. 5/5
8. Rescue Me- Once again, acoustic and hard don't mix well. I love this song, on Elva, this is one of my favorite songs, but in this one, not so much. 3.75/5
9. Elva- This one was right up there with Cailin in my mind when I first heard it, but it's starting to wear on me. It opens up with a cool little drum beat and leads into a song a bit like a mix of Geronimo and Cailin. This is a great song. 4.5/5
10. How You Feel- I was surprised to hear them switch up their style a little bit in this one. During the verse it's kind of reggae and in the chorus it's like most Unwritten Law. All I know is...Unwritten Law + reggae = good song. I love this one. 5/5
11. Shallow- This song was a great way to finish the album off with. The guitar is all chords the whole time except for the lead guitar which is awesome. This song is really upbeat and fast paced. It's one of those songs that you could listen to right when you wake up from a nap or something. It's kind of refreshing (if music is refreshing...it is for me). This song is a good one. 4/5
This album is great. An all-acoustic albums are always awesome, but this one is one of the best one's I think I've ever heard. Unwritten Law isn't like other punk bands. They rarely complain, I can't think of a song that I've heard from them where they complain like most other punk bands do. They're awesome. They're one of the only bands that can do an all-acoustic album and get away with it. Go pick it up...NOW!
