4.5 superb | musichub | September 18th 22 | If the Sun quartets show Haydn emerging into his mature era, the Russian quartets are him flexing his muscles. Terrifically eventful musical pieces, showing even more equality among the instruments and really allowing Haydn to imbue personality in the works. Highlights are the second quartet ("The Joke") with its amusing stops and starts, and the third quartet ("The Bird"), evoking natural qualities in a way akin to what Debussy and his ilk would do some 100 years later.
