An Introduction possesses. Its not often a record such as this can come along and change your perception of a scene.
All I Had
What a way to start. This track is definitely the highlight of the EP. It starts with a quiet guitar and drum intro giving the track a very relaxed feel. Then kicks in the beautiful voice of Daniel Van Zutphen. His heartfelt, sincere voice soars over the quietly tapped drums and strummed electric guitar. Comparable to Ian Curtis and his style, only higher pitched. Its mesmerising, almost addictive to listen to.
Three quarters of the way into the track the guitar, vocals and drums pick up with a burst of emotional perfection. Heartfelt singing turns into absolute agony while at the same time guitars and drumming become much more complex. This all elevates to a point with the pained yells of "I sold my life" before ending the song with the same quiet guitar and drums that introduced you to this masterpiece.
Its amazing just how much emotion they have managed to pack into this song.
There is absolutely nothing you could fault in this track. Musical beauty at its finest.
In The City
The most rock oriented song on the EP.
Starts filled with blaring electric guitars and precise drumming. They have moved away from the emotional tension of the last song into somewhat of a post hardcore/emo cliché. Unlike most bands in the scene instead of sticking with this formula
The Paper And The Plane mixes it up varying between fast paced drumming/strumming and heartfelt verses.
Van Zutphen's voice in this track is yet again gorgeous, only this time his focused less on sincerity and more on yelled vocals.
While some may see these as cliché's in themselves, there is something different about this track. Its almost an indie/post hardcore crossover, rarely done to such standards like this. With this all said this definitely the weakest track on
An Introduction.
My Dreams
Similar in feel to the first track. Fades in similarly to "All I Had" with its relaxed starting. Yet again the listener is held captive by Van Zutphen's voice, soaring above the instruments.
This track, at just under six minutes, rarely moves above the level it starts at, keeping the emotive, spacey mood throughout until at about the five minute mark the mood climaxes with Van Zutphen's vocals becoming alot more intense.
A great track.
This EP should have been given more attention then it was. There is no reason
The Paper And The Plane shouldn't hit the mainstream and become a staple of Australian Rock in similar fashion to fellows Australian bands such as
Gyroscope. While their style may be new to the general public, no one can deny the talent and beauty the
The Paper And The Plane have shown on
An Introduction.
