Nettlethrone are a Turkish death metal band, and Dissonant Progression is their debut album. Borrowing heavily from newer acts such as The Black Dahlia Murder and combining this with the style of melodic death introduced by European bands like At the Gates, Nettlethrone manage to shape their own sound and identity. A mixture of melody and brutality sums up Dissonant Progression, and while the band conforms to most modern death metal trends, they do not fall into the mire that is deathcore. Tracks such as 'Preaching The Crisis Discipline' are exhilarating and really give the album a fine edge. Although very short, this was perhaps a wise decision on behalf of the band; dragging out an already very common style would not have bode well for the overall effect of the album. Acoustic interludes also crop up amongst the tracks, however it was unfortunate that neither the acoustic nor the normal tracks had any influence of traditional Turkish music; a Middle-Eastern flavour to some of these tracks would have been fantastic. Nonetheless, a solid and enjoyable melodic death album.
