surprisingly agile melodies permeate the tracks on this cd. as close to Judas Priest and Iron Maiden as it is to Enslaved and Graveland, this release manages to make good old-fashioned straightforward melodic black/folk metal without being just another clone. although not truly outstanding, the melodic and harmonic lines used in some of these songs are exciting and uplifting in ways that one rarely encounters in music.

the area in which this causes a problem is in a lack of focus - the songs are good. several of them approach excellence. but without a lack of unified direction, it is impossible to see this album as something truly cohesive.

but it is bizarre, certainly. i SHOULD call it typical melodic black metal; i SHOULD like it only in a passing way; but the members of Trollech, albeit not geniuses, still manage to create hooks and melodies that i've not seen matched elsewhere.
