| 0.0 | istaros | August 22nd 08 | one of the more interesting black metal albums of 2007, and quite possibly that year's best black metal / industrial crossover album. despite never deviating from traditional methods of expression(traditional for the genre, that is), Otargos uses these to forge a new path through dark and sequestered portions of one's consciousness. the instrumentation is fairly traditional, with a few exceptions; but the song structures are not. the songs manage to become not only expressions of rage and despair, but derivations into metaconsciousness and astral philosophy. this is what makes a good album - not the production or technical proficiency, but the originality of the songwriting itself. this can easily recall the best releases Nachtmystium, Deathspell Omega, and Immortal have to offer, each in a different way. Nachtmystium for the transportive effect of this release's constant, aggressive lightspeed drone; Deathspell Omega for its incursions into new ways of thought; Immortal for the urgency and flow of its sound.
far from being perfect -the initial sense of impressed shock does wear off after a few listens- it is nevertheless a remarkable work and one worth looking into.
