GROOVE PLANET (http://www.grooveplanet.co.uk[/L] is the new Smooth Jazz project of veteran recording artists and producers Pete Parisetti and Angela Higney. This is an entirely independent initiative – one in which the artists deal with everything: from composition, performance and recording, production and final mastering all the way to digital distribution and promotion. Rather than manufacturing physical CDs that nobody buys anymore, GROOVE PLANET works to release one new track every two weeks and make them available through some 30 digital distribution platforms.

The seven tracks released at the time of this review seamlessly span the smooth jazz, adult contemporary and chillout genres. The level of production is excellent, featuring Pete's warm guitar tones in the style of Norman Brown and Chuck Loeb, as well as some fine nylon strings work in the style of Chris Standring. Angela's soothing voice adds an element which is not often found in the Smooth Jazz format. Her melody lines and, especially, her lush vocal harmonies make for the band's signature sound.

This is a project that has considerable potential. In a musical style that at times sounds a bit "samey", GROOVE PLANET introduces a breath of fresh air. Without striding to far from what you would expect on a smooth jazz radio programme, the songs have an originality that make them instantly recognisable. It is clear that the duo doesn't aim at stunning the listener with increadible technical feats - an attitude sadly prevalent in jazz, one that greatly contributes to the near-collapse of the jazz audience. Rather, these two are professional entertainers of a very high calibre, who focus on giving their public good value for their money.

Look to these tracks and the ones tha band is going to release on a regular basis for soothing atmospheres, stylish, contemporary compositions and enough guitar (and, occasionally, keyboard) soloing to keep things interesting for a musically discerning public.

Higly recommended.
