Review Summary: Looking for heaven in the devil's eyes
If you think a band making Nu-Metal albums in 2018 is a laughable idea, I won’t blame you. The genre pretty much ran its course straight to the finish line and then some like 15 years ago. I’m sure most people are also content to leave that era where it is, cherishing the memories from a younger and more immature self. So where does that leave Cane Hill?
Well, for starters,
Too Far Gone is a definitely interesting listen. Sure, you can hear just about every cliché under the sun being used on this album, but what Cane Hill has done here is effectively make a throwback that is both extremely listenable and adds their own unique twist on the genre. Tracks like “Too Far Gone” and “Lord of the Flies” has the vocalist sing the verses in such a way that it sounds like he is constantly talking from the back of his throat, deviating only to scream and yell for the choruses. Speaking of, Cane Hill pump out some juicy choruses here. The vocal melodies mesh with the unique instrumentation well enough to keep you coming back to listen again and again. Tracks such as “It Follows”, “Singing In The Swamp”, and “10 ¢” actually feature such interesting instrumentation that those tracks alone could draw people back for more.
Too Far Gone excels at what it was made to do; pay homage to a style past its hey-day while adding unique elements on top. The instrumentation on certain tracks here is reason enough to check the album out. Cane Hill isn’t making ground-breaking material here but what they are doing is pretty damn catchy in its own right.
