Crushing album. Real shame that there isn't much variation in the vocal performance.

A pretty humble record from one of the most interesting progressive death metal acts since
the genre's inception. The tech and prog aspects are scaled back just a touch, acting
more like flourishes on top of more aggressive, brutal riffs, and while I'd be
hard-pressed to call these songs "straight-forward" (hint: they're not), they definitely
feel more reigned-in; more concentrated, if you will. Fans of the band's debut will
definitely find much to enjoy here, as this album has quite a few similarities. This is
not to say they haven't learned a thing or two since Polarity (Spirit Guide has a distinct
Polarity influence), especially in some of the keyboard passages strewn throughout, as well
as some of the more melodic leads. Quite the contrary, Decrepit Birth are a band evolving
over time, and this is a measured change of sound to set the board back up.

Edit: the covers are bonus tracks for the digipack edition. Calm your shit people.

"someone forgot to use a high pass filter on the guitars"rWhy would you want to use a high pass filter? That would cut out the bottom end, and keep the higher frequency band.

For some reason, Decrepit Birth decide to hold back on the technicality, and while mainly the progressive side of their music is still very present, the riffage, leads and soloing is more straight-fprward than before. More focus on brutality like on the first record returns too.

I expected nothing but in the end really enjoyed the album.

What is with half of the runtime being taken up by covers?

I used to always think of Decrepit Birth as a tech-death band, but in reality they are more of a progressive death metal. On that note, Axis Mundi is pretty good, being straight forward death metal for the most part while showing their technicality during their progressive segments.

someone forgot to use a high pass filter on the guitars

edit: this is a callout. wretched cacophony sir you have messed up my good man. yes that is what a
hi-pass filter does, but the reason it is required is that the bottom end of the guitars has too
much low end resonance and thus muddies up the bottom end of the kicks and bass during sections
with lots of palm muting

Production makes the album a chore and the vocal performance is annoying. Pity, because the riffs are pretty inventive, but good musicianship =/= good album, as this one reiterates. Not sure why they thought having 3 covers at the end was a good idea either.
