Review Summary: wow, looks like there’s new music to be played in rundown JCPenneys nationwide!

HAIM have been a pretty polarizing band of the past decade. Their debut stirred up a lot of buzz when that dropped in 2013 due to its strong empowering message, irresistibly catchy hooks, and what it wound up doing for female-only bands in not only their scene but music in general. It was rightfully so though, as their debut triumphed over indie-pop music as a whole, and had plenty quirky 80’s-isms to satisfy even the most seasoned of indie-pop listeners. But the issue of starting off so strongly with a debut like Days Are Gone is, where do you go from there? Where could you go from there? Especially after 4 years in between albums, having a “sophomore slump” seems inevitable.

So going into this, I really had no idea what to expect; I hadn’t listened to any of the teaser tracks that were released beforehand, and all I had to go from was their previous record. So let me just get this out of the way when I say, if you’re a fan of Days Are Gone, just go listen to that instead. Picking up a copy of Something To Tell You isn’t worth it. Something To Tell You is just a fluid, gutless, and monotonous shadow of its predecessor. Any traces of empowerment and a message have been replaced with inoffensive and unoriginal synthpop-laden love songs that just leave you wishing for something more. There are decent hooks placed pretty well across this thing, but that’s really all this record has to offer. Sonically, the record flows almost too well. When I say that, I mean, if you’re not paying attention, the entire 45 minutes will go by in the blink of an eye, The issue with that is, if you are paying attention, those 45 minutes will feel like hours, as everything sounds so similar in tone and monotonous, as almost every song sounds the same besides lyrics and the odd bass or synth line here and there. There is almost nothing gratifying about the record in its intricacies.

What really tops this cake off as a disappointment extraordinaire is its lack of message. HAIM were really backing up their message and their empowering ideals for feminism and liberal ideologies with catchy hooks coupled with actually interesting instrumentation on Days Are Gone, which made for a phenomenal and more notably, an important listen for the time. Their interviews where they would constantly state they’re a band and not a “girl band” feel almost empty when there’s no power to that message on this record and they just conform towards what they were fighting against. What’s left here just feels like HAIM realized it had been 4 years in between records and just wanted to throw whatever they could together, and it just feels rushed, lackluster, and painfully gutless. While the singles will probably be in rotation around the citizens of Tumblr for next year or two, as a full listening experience, Something To Tell You feels like there could have been so much more in substance, and in message, as we all know HAIM were way more capable than this painfully average listening experience.

wat?

days are gone was a bunch of poppy love songs i.e. breezy summer fun but by no means important

no need to shoehorn the bullshit feminist narrative into every discussion of girl bands

the lyrics had an empowering vibe to me personally, and i know a lot of women especially locally and that i'm friends with that have said HAIM have inspired them to go forward with their musical ventures so i'm really just speaking from personal perspective i'm not trying to shoehorn anything it was an important record in my eyes and many others'

what i meant by that is, to me, none of that 'girl power' stuff was inherent in the actual music of DAG

happy to hear your girl m8s got inspired to make music after hearing DAG tho

sorry if i came across a bit harsh :]

Some minor nitpicks: "plenty quirky 80’s-isms" might read better as "plenty of quirky"; and second paragraph, first sentence, "expect, I hadn’t" could be separated with a full stop or semicolon, rather than a comma. You don't quite demonstrate how the band go against past ideals either, so it seems like an unfair criticism. (I'm sure it isn't, I just haven't listened to the album.)

Otherwise, really well-written review, mate. Keep up the good work, you're getting better with each write-up.

fixed thank you for pointing that out. also i tried to make it clear that they went against their previous ideals in the sense that they kind of abandoned them. thanks for the positive feedback though!

Album is like an airy diaper.. so much so that it made go back and relisten to the debut, in case I was drinking the Kool Aid a little bit.. and I think I was..

Good write up, though I think you over exaggerate the debut's impact or objective quality..

Um, do you have some different copy of Days Are Gone, cuz last time I listened to that record it was just a bunch of throwback pop-rock feel good anthems (kinda like this record)

You Never Knew is the biggest Fleetwood Mac rip ever but it could also be the best Deb Hynes song ever

I wonder who they'll rip off on the next album. In a few years time once they're done with the 90s and 2000s they'll eventually rip off themselves.

Sarah mclachlan for the third album rip most likely.. except three mclachlans.. which I think is what kicked off all the fighting in brave heart

I think the thing that's downgrading this album is that there are SOOOOOOOOOOO many repeated verses. Like jeez, they couldnt think of any other lyrics besides the chorus. It really hurts the tracks. But some have a lot of potential. I think Little of Your Love, Something to Tell You, and Kept Me Crying are the highlights. Everything else is skippable

oh fuck yeah, thanks for the feature dudes. and yeah they're still ripping off fleetwood mac just not as good unfortunately also yeah i know in substance it wasn't the most "empowering" and "political" record but in context to a lot of their interviews as well as general attitude it certainly gave that feel for myself and inspired a lot of people i know personally but i guess it affected people differently, it's all about perspective i suppose

Yeah as a fan of the band, I completely agree with this. I still like this album but the punch just isn't there this time. Makes me a little concerned for future offerings. It's a shame because we know they can do better than this, but idk that they will.
