Review Summary: You going to kill me, Snake? Not now, I'm too tired.

I was scanning through the pages of bandcamp for interesting new music and I came across a Gothic rock band from Toronto called September Death. They released a four track demo back in February titled Masquerade and it's a pretty solid throwback to 80's post-punk/death rock but with better production. While not really offering anything new to this gloomy style of music, September Death make up for it with catchy hooks, muscular pulse and infectious rhythms. Fans of Alien Sex Fiend, Christian Death, Cemetery and The Bellicose Minds should give this demo a listen.

The opening track Hell Night is the demo's most accessible and downright catchy song. Featuring a booming synth beat and angsty baritone vocals in addition to some cool bell effects and brooding swagger, I could picture Kurt Russel running through the streets of old New York and clobbering inner city goons left and right as this track runs through it's brief run-time. The next track I Feed doesn't quite reach the heights of Hell Night but it's still a fun, gloomy number that will satiate the needs of the basic Goth bitch such as myself. Spiritual Cramp is an aggressive punk number that's charmingly upbeat. The last track Coda: Procession is a melancholy instrumental featuring some rain effects and a lumbering guitar melody that signifies the end of this brief recording.

For what it is, Masquerade is a tasty little appetizer, much like FRIDAY's fried pickles. It wont fill you up but it'll take away the hunger briefly.
