3.5 great | Alabaster Jones | May 5th 17 | And now for the obligatory "mysterious" dude who makes some tight ambient of 2017, Starving Ghosts! Obviously not much is known about this guy other than his name is J.E. Sheehy, he's Canadian, he evidently has a love for The Simpsons, and he's got a really beautiful self-titled debut to his name under his moniker. The album is made up of guitar improvisation, loops, and ambient soundscapes, and has some really gorgeous and sleep-inducing (in a good way) moments. The closer is the big highlight here, with a minimal, yet quite large-sounding ambient loop being surrounded by slight drones and guitar strums whenever Sheehy sees fit, creating a truly enveloping track that is very easy to lose yourself in. You have to love that adorable little melody on the fourth track as well, genuinely brought a smile to my face when I heard it the first time. Hopefully he continues to make stuff like this in the future, but maybe larger in scale and more refined. He's got a sweet blueprint for that idea, that enough is certain.
