1.0 awful | Herbie Chrost | May 29th 17 | OK, let's stop for a second. Before you come at me, I'ma let you know. I'ma blame my A&R. Because he listened to that song many times and he allowed me to say that.. I guess for a second, I thought a cello was a woodwind instrument and it is not. And nobody ever said shit. Nobody ever pulled up a pic and
said, "Hey man. I don't know if you know what this is, but it ain't that." I fucked up. I thought Squidward played the cello. He don't. That's a flute. I fucked up. But it do sound good.

1.5 very poor | Jade | June 3rd 17 | this is what happens when you inject an alt-pop rap weird into a huge studio budget with no artistic direction. what does yachty want? to make money, so he says in all his interviews. and to be happy, i guess. good luck figuring that out, captain nautica. anyway, the most predictable thing happens, which is that yachty makes a very passable record that is by turns playful, overly serious, and downright euphoric. i'm sure the kid's having a blast and he doesn't care how the music he makes sounds. he has no vision; instead he follows around whatever the producers happen to be doing and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. an incredibly trivial record that was destined to come out of the soundcloud rapscape sooner or later.

2.5 average | Alabaster Jones | May 26th 17 | I'm not really sure about this one. Last year Lil Yachty won a lot of people over, myself included, with Lil Boat, and though that tape owed more to Soulja Boy's "Zan With That Lean" than people realize, it was still one of the freshest projects in a year full of them. The Yachty we hear on Teenage Emotions, though, honestly sounds like he lost a part of himself that he had at this point a year ago. He doesn't necessarily sound lazy, just perplexingly restrained, which unfortunately makes him blend in with his contemporaries rather than stand out. The album isn't without its highlights: "Bring It Back" is the type of stuff that initially gravitated me towards Yachty; the type of stuff where on a first listen you're not sure if it's the worst or best thing you've heard all year. There are plenty of songs here as well that are certainly passable as fun party-rap bangers, but when putting those back-to-back-to-back during a seventy minute album, things can get somewhat stale. Perhaps this one is a grower, but it's just as likely that Lil Yachty needs to rediscover and record exactly what made him one of the most interesting and wholly enjoyable hip-hop artists of the year for so many in 2016.

3.0 good | TheManMachine | September 6th 17 | I think it's safe to say no one buys this guy when he forces a freestyle or feigns a tough-guy tude; even his ever-loving momma. But if you get through the gaggle of gag-worthy lines-o-lechery and Migos showing him up without breaking a sweat and undeniably drawn-out duration, Yachty and his bevy of beat-men can wield quite the peculiar pop power: surprisingly pliable production, cheesy crooning, youthful yelping, an affable positivity commixing with love+longing and pitiful priorities. Contrast Of Teenage Emotions: "Sent me pictures of her coochie / She said they nicknamed her Juicy / Cuz she keeps a wet pussy", "Since a young one you've always been clever / Let's grow old, rock in chairs and play checkers". But for what it's worth, my fave just goes "Harley harley harley harley harley".

1.5 very poor | EricSchuiteboer | July 31st 17 | Way too long, lyrics are goofy but far from entertaining, the production is better but poorly executed. Very hard to listen to. Dont even bother

3.0 good | C. Deez | July 19th 17 | After Peek-a-boo this thing nosedives so deep until X-Men, but everything from there onward is pretty decent.

1.0 awful | dihstyle69 | June 1st 17 | lil boat had its moments when yachty embraced his weird, goofy persona and wore it to the maximum. that's rarely present on his new debut, though and he just hasn't the skills necessary to pull other styles well enough for thingd not to crumble. this album is a disaster and i'm not sure if he will be able to get his ass on track, tbh. 1-

1.0 awful | Corney | May 31st 17 | I want to give this a 1.5. However, it is chalk full of shitty songs that overmask the somewhat tolerable ones. This is shit and the auto tune on songs like momma and no more are embarrassing. Tracks like those test my patience to even sit through.

of poptimism for rap because this is just getting depressing.
