3.5 great | Alabaster Jones | February 10th 17 | Being of Celtic decent myself, I have a partiality to the music from the region. Shooglenifty was a quite original band for what they did in their early years, even if none of the music appearing hear was originally composed by them. What makes Venus In Tweeds an original album is the notion that Shooglenifty took these songs passed down through generations and gave them a twist not yet heard beforehand. This began the subgenre of Celtic music known as acid croft, or, in layman's terms, Celtic electronic music. The use of traditional songs and instruments is mixed well with these very airy and quite appropriate synths and drums, and it all sounds like a natural extension of the generational tunes. If you don't already like Celtic music, I can't say you'll enjoy this record, but if you do, this is an important one in its history, which definitely makes it worthy of a listen.
