This was the very first record that Blue Note Records released when they began pressing on twelve-inch vinyl, and is officially the first record of their main series, which of course makes it a collectors item to die for. Miles Davis, Volume 1 compiled songs from two early Davis records in Young Man With A Horn and the ten-inch Miles Davis, Vol. 3. None of the songs played her are Davis' own, except for "Donna", an early recording of the song "Dig" that was credited to Jackie McLean. Yet, it's still all really solid hard bop, with "How Deep Is The Ocean?" being an obvious and wonderful standout. Just goes to show that Davis was something else, even while playing compositions not of his own hand.
