Release Date: 1997 | Tracklist

Review Summary: A highly catchy and influencial metalcore album, it's safe to say its on par with Dipset maybe.

Hearts Once Nourished With Hope And Compassion is pretty much the prime in early melodic metalcore. So many bands in both the modern metalcore and hardcore scene have drawn vast influence from them, because of how perfect they blend hardcore and metal. It doesn't sound like watered down melodic death, but it doesn't sound like brocore either. The guitars have a great ambient sort of tone to them, mixed with rhythmic chugging to create a simultaneous heavy and light atmosphere, and it always at some point progresses into more of a standard melodic hardcore sound and back to metallic breaks, kind of like what you'd hear an early 2000's release, but less spazzy. The busy drums provide a motivating backbone, and the bass provides a nice backing groove.

The vocals are perfect for the music; an angsty shout that doesn't come out as whiny, with fitting spoken portions. The lyrical content is quite eloquently written, in a well thought out, philosophical manner. It's a heartfelt expression, on a highly respectable level.

"And they call me a fool as they do so well./Destroy the morality none have known for so long if ever at all/And I would lay down my life to birth a new generation of a righteous culture./To a people I could proudly love and cherish./For that's all I've ever asked for and been deprived of./Not a tear for those of flesh/Not a stayed hand for a world that prostitutes itself./Not a minute more of degeneration./Words cannot express my disappointment./Words cannot express my disapproval./So I hate."

I honestly rate this album so high for the classical value and Shai Hulud's impact on the genre. So many bands of so many styles of metal and hardcore list them as an influence, so many large bands these days have so many similar points. You can hear a little bit of Shai Hulud in Misery Signals, in Comeback Kid, 7 Angels 7 Plagues, and even See You Next Tuesday. It's just very powerful, and a definite must have for any fan of metallic hardcore.

Make your reviews a little longer. It seems a little lazy. You covered the album alright, it's just a tad short.

Hbp, write your own reviews rather than paraphrasing Anus.com.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: it's a review, not an overview.

I agree with Hbp. Your review didn't tell me much about this album aside from the fact that it sounds like metalcore and you praise it because of its influence on 'so' many bands. Just add some more depth in to the instruments section and it will be perfect.

It's more of an ambient type of melodic hardcore album with metallic breaks, kind of like what you'd hear an early 2000's release, but less spazzy.

Also, generally, referencing bands of similar sound would give you an idea, wouldn't you think! This Message Edited On 01.10.08

This is just barely long enough to not be a sound-off. I agree more detail really is needed, the review is just so sparse.

You need to calm down in defending your review. When I read a review I expect to find out what the band sounds like in some detail and some highlights from the album, something to give the review substance. If I read this and had never heard Shai-Hulud this wouldn't give me much of an idea as to how this album actually sounds other than it somewhat sounds like the other modern metallic hardcore acts, that aren't anything special, you listed.

Hahahah calm down, I didn't mean for my criticism to make it sound pushy. Thats just our opinions on the matter hahahaha. We like our descript passages of "THE GUITAR LEADS SEAR LIKE A STAR ON ITS WAY TO A SUPERNOVA" hahahaha.
A nice, short, concise review! Better?

True. I'm just saying, telling somebody their review gives no idea on sound just because it's not long is moronic.

Hey, The Wizard: read the first paragraph repeatedly. Oh wait no, it's doesn't even get passed the track listing, it's too short to be descriptive. This Message Edited On 01.10.08

Relax. Just take the criticism or if you feel its unjust, give some reasons why you think its moronic to ask for some more detail. Thats all I have to say on the matter. I don't want to tie your panties in a knot anymore than I have.
