3.0 good | Alabaster Jones | November 8th 16 | Dark Blue plays post-punk pretty close to the table, at least as far as the revival sound goes. What that entails for Start Of The World is a collection of solid, albeit unspectacular post-punk songs with an indie edge to them. Most of the songs don't deviate from the path set early on by opener "Union Of Buffoons": mid-paced, simple guitar, bass, and drum work, and charming if somewhat initially off-putting vocals. Things change on "Paralyzed By Fear", which turns things to a sort of post-punk piano ballad, and the chorus of "Bombs On The Beach" really takes the song to heights unreached by the rest of the album. It's homogenous nature leads to some songs blending into one another, but there aren't any bad tracks to speak of and the albums production sounds very enjoyable. It's a simple, uncomplicated post-punk affair for Dark Blue on their sophomore record, which ultimately gets the job done well.
