When it comes to Mello Music Group, I hold this theory: the quality of the records is directly proportional to how many members of the stable are working on the records. Which means that solo records = decent, posse cuts = phenomenal. In the case of Ugly Heroes, there are three guys: rappers Red Pill and Verbal Kent, and producer Apollo Brown, which according to the theory must mean this record is pretty sweet, right? It's yet to fail me so far, and in this case it's no different. This is some of the most consistent and enjoyable boom-bap to come out this year, and doesn't fall into the trap of sounding dated or behind a couple of decades. The production is very good all the way around, with use of soulful samples and enjoyable guitar, piano, and bass lines permeating the album. The rapping is solid as well, as the flows are on point and the lyrics dexterous (although some slightly hackneyed pop-culture and political references do show up). To sum it up, Everything In Between is a very enjoyable boom-bap record from some genuine dudes.
