Actually listening to some American Primitive and it becomes a bit more pronounced the influence it had on post-rock music (and vice versa?). "Modern Country" is, more or less, seven tracks of quaint guitar-lead music backed up the kind of soft, jazzy drumming one often finds in post-rock. The combination makes the music much more atmospheric and pensive--though it does also contribute what one might call a "background music" feel. Still, Tyler's musicianship and detail are top notch, making for a very fine release.

Titled perhaps as a knowing wink towards what just about anyone considers to be the majority of modern country, Tyler+troupe bypass words and corn and airwaves for sprawling-n-spotless instrumentals that combine the alfresco atmospheres of finespun folk and the pacific pensiveness of post-rock. Certainly comely, no doubt all-around dexterous and detailed, rarely gives way to abeyance, but the constant composure has 'em gravitating a bit too close to congenial background music -- see the climactic great unwind's seamless segue in-n-out of Birdville for verification.

As much a mellow jam for reefer sessions as a yeehaw accompaniement to a ride in the wild wild west, Modern Country simply is beautiful american primitivism, with the closer being a contender for best crossover between country and post-rock (as zaru nicely pointed out).
