After roughly 15 years of inactivity following the unfortunate demise of their original and incredibly talented bass player Koh Morota, Doom have returned. Gone is the industrial sound that Fujita flirted with on their 1999 (former?) swansong, and for the most part back is the original Doom formula. More streamlined, sure, and certainly not without some elements of groove/alternative/nu metal here and there, but ultimately it still sounds like Doom - angular riffs, rock vibes, twisting songwriting and of course fretless bass noodling. Speaking of which, of course filling Morota's shoes was always going to be a herculean task, but Takatoshi Kodaira does about a respectable job as possible on the bass. Overall it's not quite as strong or fresh as their classic material but it's hard to see die-hard fans disliking this.
