3.5 great | Alabaster Jones | December 8th 15 | San Francisco's own Amber Asylum has a style hard to pin down. They use a pretty swell combination of neoclassical, dark ambient, doom metal, and darkwave. On Sin Eater, their first full length project in six years, the group melds slow-burning, gloomy cellos and violins with thick underlying bass and steady, methodical drumming. The vocals are airy and dreamy, and the productions add to the ethereal aesthetic. Yet, it sometimes can drag on a bit longer than it's welcomed to, and this can cause the experience to be diluted due to boredom. Still, it's pretty well done, with the first couple of songs and the excellent one-two punch of "Executioner" and the title-track/closer being of particular note. In all, Amber Asylum play to their strengths on their first project in some time, and manage to put out a good, solid album as a result.

0.0 | Dewinged STAFF | December 16th 16 | Maybe it's the constant flow of members in and out of the project but this last album doesn't add much to what Amber Asylum was. Still masterful in the neoclassical, darkwave genre but not as interesting as in their debut.
