Review Summary: ‘No Comment’ is a very promising debut for Dregg. Every song is solid and while there’s definitely room to improve, this young Melbourne band are one to keep an eye out for in the future, without a doubt.

New kids on the hardcore block, Dregg, have released their debut EP ‘No Comment’. Clocking in at slightly over 10 minutes, it’s hard, fast and demanding of your attention.

From the get-go, it’s evident that this 5 track is going to be unrelenting. Beginning with a solid, typical core breakdown and accompanied by two-step inducing guitar work, Riddle Me This introduces Dregg with a bang. Goof Troop continues this, upping the energy even more with angry lyrics and classic, thrashy riffs. Finally, just for good measure, they throw in another gritty breakdown to finish the track off.

Get Owt showcases rap-inspired vocal patterns, backing yells that basically begs listeners to start finger pointing and a down tempo breakdown that concludes the track in a very hard-hitting fashion. Let’s just say, the kids in the middle will be happy with this one.

Jumping straight into the next track, the insanely chaotic intro of Dawg Dayz brings variety to the record, before transitioning into even more two-step inducing riffs. Dale Tanner of Ocean Grove performs guest vocals on this track, and the grunge-y style adds an extra layer of grit and gloom to the intense vibe of the EP.

Curriculum Critters, at 3 minutes and 33 seconds, is the longest offering on the record. It’s more structured instrumentally and the vocals are even angrier, highlighted well during the ‘secret’ vocal piece. It’s an intense, if odd, conclusion to the EP.

‘No Comment’ is a very promising debut for Dregg. Every song is solid and while there’s definitely room to improve, this young Melbourne band are one to keep an eye out for in the future, without a doubt. Catch you at a show?

(edit: fixed)
the review is a bit track-by-tracky, but that's expected with short EPs I guess. nice and straightforward too. as you improve your writing, you can think of ways to spice things up, and go beyond basic sound description.

"Dawg Dayz"
"Rap-inspired"

I would probably enjoy this as much as I would hearing a woman scream because the coat hanger is missing its target.
