Review Summary: Explores many different moods, and is very interesting. The lyrics are weird but good.
"...And Your City Needs Swallowing" is a progressive, but in a way you wouldn't think of, record. It is very unique sounding, and it wanders all over the place like most progressive albums, but at the same time it flows well and makes sense. The actual sound of the record is somewhat of a heavy rock or post hardcore sound. The singer has a very unique and powerful voice, combining screaming, singing, and yelling. The guitar work is all over the place, ranging from power chord progressions to weird leads to slow clean guitars. The guitarists tend to use seventh chords more than pretty much any band of their genre. The bass is probably the stand out instrument (which is odd) because the tone is perfect for their sound. The drums are pretty awesome as well, with some incredible fills.
"Chasing Bears and Reading Scriptures" starts the album off, and I feel like it should have come later in the album, due to the fact that it is a lengthy track. This song has a great intro, and wanders through many parts, and is an enjoyable listen.
The next song on the album is "Betcha Your Job" which is my favorite from the cd. It is also very long, and has a very droningly slow theme towards the end, making the listener wonder when it will end. The lyrics are quite strange on this song and they make me laugh.
"I'm Pretty Tired and I'm Pretty Old" starts off very slowly, then builds up. This would have served as a better album opener due to the building up nature of the song. It seems like one of the more emotional songs of the record.
"Text the Sex Rhyme" is another standout track off of this album. It is probably the catchiest song of all, without the wandering guitar lines. The singing stands out the most on this song, with catchy melodies, and cool lyrics. The lyrics in this song are a conversation, and it makes for a very interesting read.
"Scribble Jack" is the most aggressive song on the cd, and is quite short. The guitar lines in this song are very odd yet cool. This song has a very weird rhythm as well, but doesn't make it less catchy.
"A Going Under" is the guitar instrumental of the record, and it is awesome. It is feeled with delay and tapping, and is so cool sounding. With that being said, it is too long, and gets boring after a while.
This album rocks hard, but it is intelligent at the same time. Not too many bands sound like these guys, but they aren't completely unique.
