Openly calling themselves ?black feminist punks?, London?s Big Joanie consciously recall the riot grrrl heyday, with muddy, grungy guitars, but with biting melodies, the lo-fi aesthetics of godmothers Big Mama Thornton and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and the drums that decorated the recordings of The Ronnettes. Operating with a ?strong powerful vision of black womanhood?, Big Joanie want to rewrite history and pave the future with their nuanced and determined songwriting. They?re currently running a Kickstarter to release their next 7? single (on their own Sistah Punk Records label).
