4.0 excellent | Wildhoney | May 3rd 16 | Take the sexual and nocturnal atmosphere that's saturating today's r&b / electronic scene, and rcombine it with the detail, orchestral flourishes, and catchiness of Bonobo's most sensual works r(I'm most reminded of "Stay the Same," and the rest of Black Sands. Also, Shlohmo's busy, knick-rknack percussion style). And then slow it all down. Unlike many other cookie-cutter acts rattempting to take on this sleek and sexy modern sound, Alina Maraz and Galimatias succeed on more rlevels than just creating the "mood", on which so many of their contemporaries tend to over-focus, rwhere the goal is simply to create something erotic-sounding and not much else. No, this album is renjoyable on a purely musical level as well. It proves that new-millennium sex-jams don't have to rbe minimal and monochromatic to be sexy. They can also be busy, nuanced, and, occasionally, quite rloud. The duo seesaw between these two sounds masterfully. Excited for the full-length, if it's ranywhere as good as this.
