Really consistent modern minimalism album, I can already tell how much each repeating melody, build and atmosphere is going to be etched into my brain. Plus the production sounds really amazing, the best thing Colin Stetson has done in my opinion, and Sarah is a beast on the violin. You will be hard pressed to find someone creating a larger sound out of such a small instrument.

Man that's a cool ass album, thanks dede for hte rec. Whilst it is primarily based on the sax + violin duo (already on paper this sounds like a dope album dunnit), there are lots of subtle little things going on in the back that give the whole a superimposed mystic, esoteric, F#A#8-esque vibe. The very album intro is kinda droney, before transforming into a Steve Reich-ey pattern on the two lead instruments - already I was in love, if that's not a recipe for bedecore idk what is. After the shorter but imo less convincing 2, 3 feels again like if Steve Reich had written a jazz album before getting more intense in the midtrack. Very good. Again 4 is a bit shorter and less convincing, more of an interlude track really. 5 then takes a super cool turn in vibe and sounds like the soundtrack to evil orc plottings. 6 adds more prominent ?electronic elements in the back, and gets really intense and almost riffy, like GYBE writing the soundtrack to a lion chasing a gazelle in some BBC Earth docco. 7 is also quite evil sounding and intense, but does end more calmly after the storm, before drifting into the very soft noisy washout 8, which dies down slowly and beautifully in an album conclusion that bumps this a point. Mystic, very cool, quite unique, and wonderfully executed. 4.0

A saxophone and a violin enter the studio and create this motherfucking record. They seem to be discussing with one another, but this discussion always tackles the sames ~vibes~, just modifying their intensity and layering. Don't fucking care, this discussion is too fucking wild to ignore.

Excellent modern classical with post-rock influence. Stetson isn't as prominent as his solo records (which is expected due to this being a collaborative effort) but rather his playing weaves into the dreamy, soaring fabric. I wasn't familiar with Neufeld before this, but she is fantastic too. Beautiful melodies are repeated but never to the point of boredom, and the songs are organic, reminiscent of birds in flight. The title track is weak and the record ends too suddenly, but overall Never Were the Way She Was is exceptional. "The sun roars into view" is one of the best songs of the year.

This is one of the most engaging and beautiful pieces of music you will hear all year. It's great to hear Colin
Stetson back in action, and the string sections from Sarah Neufeld compliment his sax-playing beautifully.
I'll probably 4.5 this by the end of the year. Really beautiful listen.
