Home is the perfect balance of familiarity and deviation. Garrels' signature elements are here;
beautiful acoustic instrumentation and some of the best vocals currently in folk music. Alongside
that, Garrels' soul influence is more prominent then ever before, giving many of these tracks an
interesting new feel. Home is also Garrels' most cohesively themed record to date, and benefits
from listening to it from front to back. It's never easy following up a classic, which is exactly
what Garrels' is doing with his new album. His 2011 effort titled Love & War & the Sea In Between
is a masterpiece; a criminally underheard folk epic. Nevertheless, he pulls it off, adding another
excellent release to his discography.

The best-kept secret in the Christian music scene. Garrels is remarkably consistent, and this album is no exception. rRecommended tracks: "Morning Light" and "At the Table"

1.5 very poorbixquick33 | April 24th 15

Home is the typical Christian album, which is an ablum limited to redundant chord progressions and
very few musical implementations. Yes, Garrels uses a wide array of different instruments but he
still confines himself to the traditional musical keys of G,E,C, and D for the entire album. The
slow melodic pace of every song is exactly the same besides Leviathan which has an interesting
drum beat only to be drowned in slow one chord guitar strokes. Home's closest comparison would be
Ys by Joanna Newsom. Josh Garrels will make your ears bleed on Colors. Josh Garrels has a distinct
annoying feature in some songs where he falsettos into screechy chalk board sound waves, causing
the audience to cringe in agony. Garrels falls short on his lyrics with the music. Every song is
about a child returning to his father. As a Christian we would understand this as leaving faith
and then returning back to our Lord. So I will ask you as a listener is an entire album
interesting if every song is about the same thing and the music is all the same? Overall if Josh
Garrels wants to be appreciated as an experimental alternative artist his music needs a lot more
musical depth and quality.
