Review Summary: Untapped Potential

‘Everything But What You Need’, the first effort by the side project of State Champs bassist Ryan Scott Graham, is a frustrating listen. That’s not to say that it’s a bad album, but it could have been so much more. Graham consistently under-commits to the ideas he has, ideas that, if fulfilled, would have made for a brilliant record. In the end then ‘Everything But What You Need’ repeatedly comes close to doing something genuinely interesting but all too frequently slumps into mundane, unethralling and overcautious pop-infused emo.

The intimacy of the record is as much of a crutch as it is a selling point. The lyrics often transcend from emotional honesty into incessant whining after a few listens. Examples include “I don’t know anything about anything anymore / and you don’t know anything about me because I wont let you” from ‘A List Of Things’ as well as the bulk of ‘Ruined’, which come across as immature rather than particularly profound. They can also suffer from excessive vagueness often leaving the listener scratching their head, left with the knowledge that Graham is suffering from romantic fatigue but with little elaboration as to why.

Furthermore, Graham’s vocal delivery is irritatingly inconsistent. Despite how the lyrics cascade with emotion on tracks like ‘Locking Lips’, Graham often appears disinterested in the lazy way his lines dribble out in the bulk of the album, the biggest offender being ‘Tiny Furnace’. This isn’t aided by the often-lacking instrumentation, consistently lackluster and aimless. The guitars guitar and the drums drum but nothing much happens of interest. ‘Tiny Furnace’, ‘Confusion’ and ‘Guess and Check’ in particular are unforgivably dull, the former two trying to pick things up with a change of pace in their second halves that come far too late redeem the tracks.

However, the record is not entirely disappointing. Songs like ‘Art School’ and ‘Locking Lips’ sparkle with potential, demonstrating Graham’s ability to carefully blend pop and emo without the music feeling disingenuous as it can do when the two genres collide. The songs are to the point, personal and incredibly catchy, qualities that the record generally lacks. They have an addictive barebones acoustic vibe creating a feeling of intimacy that complements the songs well-crafted lyrics. These lyrics are creative and introspective without slipping into the excessive self-loathing that hinders other tracks on the record. Singles ‘Knots’ and ‘Adjacent’ are also enjoyable even if clearly playing it safe in adopting more of a subdued pop-punk sound. Another standout song is ‘Eight Weeks’, demonstrating a vocal range and variety that is frustratingly lacking from the bulk of the record. Many of these songs admittedly also suffer slightly from vague lyrics and so-so instrumentation but thankfully show Graham’s potential to craft excellent songs in the future.

‘Everything But What You Need’ is an unfortunate example of untapped potential. Many of the record’s flaws arguably stem from Graham’s lack of experience and should hopefully be easily mendable. Furthermore, when Graham delivers compelling vocals with similarly compelling instrumentation, as some tracks prove he can, ‘Speak Low If You Speak Love’ becomes something worth getting excited about. However, in the end the record is plagued with needless filler, often dull instrumentation and inconsistent vocals resulting in an underwhelming experience. Until these flaws are alleviated ‘Speak Low If You Speak Love’ is, for the most part, everything but what we need.

Been sitting on several drafts of this for months but decided to scrap them and just write what I thought. Hence its one of my rougher reviews, so apologies for any issues. Constructive criticism always welcomed.

Cheers Connor. Yeah Knots, Art School and Locking Lips are the highlights for me, the rest is either ok or not so great

I'm unsure if "bassist" in the opening sentence needs to be capitalised, and there are a couple points where punctuation could have been better utilised to create greater or more pointed emphasis (e.g. "...despite how the lyrics cascade with emotion on tracks like ‘Locking Lips’[,] Graham often appears disinterested" and "ideas that[, if fulfilled,] would have made for a brilliant record"). I hope that makes sense.

Otherwise excellent review, man! Your best, I think. Well done. I guess I won't listen to this apart from the highlights you mentioned, though. :P

Thanks blushful, good edits, will tweak it when I'm at a laptop. Thanks, really appreciate it. And yeah, the whole thing is not worth a listen, but I'm hopeful for his future releases

No problem! I just finished listening to it and I think I agree with most of the points mentioned in the review; I think I might end up liking it a bit more, though.

And things have been a bit busier with school, so I'm not too sure I'll have time till mid-November to even make a start. Plus, reviews like this - which are so clear and well-written - inspire me a bit more to want to put more time into writing the reviews themselves, I'm not too proud of the ones I've written thus far. But thanks for the inspiration, I'll get onto it ASAP! I hope you get time to work on some reviews, too, this one makes me excited for whatever you do in the future.

Thats fair enough, initially it was a high 3.5 but it grew old pretty quickly for me.

Haha cheers, wouldn't have thought i'd written anything particularly inspirational, so thanks. Thats fair enough, when I'm busy i struggle to find time for Sput, let alone actually reviewing. Yeah your first one was astounding, gonna be hard to match that standard ;)

Thanks. Despite the fact I have a lot of free time in my hands I've been struggling with reviewing. I think I'm churning through new music too fast to actually form an intelligent opinion that could fill a page, should probably slow it down haha

On second thought, I don't think I like this much. It reminds me of some of the music I listened to when I was a child (I'm not sure what it is, perhaps The Maine at certain points, I can't pinpoint it).

And agreed, name is bad. empire! empire! is a lot better I feel, and it fits whatever aesthetic was created around their titles and such quite well.

Feel like changing this to a 2.5, re-listened to the record and read over the review and it doesn't seem like a 3

It reads like a 2.5 to me as well, but I think it's a great review regardless, and the difference is only a subtle one.

Definitely a lot of filler on this record. I love the folk vibes and some of the lyrics can be pretty good, but overall it doesn't go very for me. This album, if anything, is a good jumping off point for later. This would be great music to see unplugged or in a really tiny venue, to help the intimacy.
