Review Summary: Catamenia mastered again the art of melodic black metal.

The wolves from cold Finland are back. And with their new album Location:COLD they are back in big style! But preceding the release of this ablum CATAMENIA had problems with their singer Olli Mustonen. So they replaced him on this album by Antti "Hape" Haapsamo, singer of MORS SUBITA.

If you like the predecessors "Eskhata", "Chaos Born" and "Winternight Tragedies" there is a very big chance you will like this album too. The Finns continue to walk the path the paved for themselves with catchy crunchy guitar riffs, fast and slow passages, killing drums and nicely embedded keyboards. I'd like especially to take up the keyboards. They are well played and very well composed. They are not tending to become some power metal cliche as it is nowadays for many rising bands.

Listening to the album will bring your thoughts to cold Finland as the coldness breathes upon you from their songs. The first song "The Tribe Of Eternity" is real opener. In this song CATAMENIA "sums up" how the album wil sound like. Every one of the elements on this album is immersed in this track. So if you like this track you will like the whole album. But the Finns do not stand still which is proven on the track "Coldbound". I hear here some inspiration in AMORPHIS. Even if this track is mid-tempo, CATAMENIA managed to implement here some of the black metal elements. Finnish sung "Tuhat Vuotta" continues the tradition of at least one song in their native tongue and once more combines ferocity and melodies, while the title track brings back some of those rough, clear vocals embedded into a very varied song, while "The Day When The Sun Faded Away" approaches the genre more slow- to mid-paced, with brilliant melodies. The last song on the album is W.A.S.P. cover "I Wanna Be somenody". I think this cover is managed very well.

The typical wolf cover, catchiness of the songwriting are the typical CATAMENIA elements. They have found their style and sticking to it. And that is good!

I think that you need to add more info in this review, or in your next. When I red this I thought that it was going to sound like Kalmah or Children Of Bodom. But when I checked on another site, the author wrote that this was more like symphonic black metal. Dimmu Borgir stuff and similar bands.
Anyway, welcome to the site!

Making the hilarious and stupid assumption that this would sound anything like CoB or Kalmah is your own fault.

I really like the vocals on this album, but the mix job is pretty sloppy. It sounds like a bit of a jumbled mess when there are lots of things going on.

There's been shorter than this...the length is fine but it could use some more content.

I agree with SynGates...I've chosen this length because whe I was reading a long review I stopped in the middle...it bored me. So that's why this is how it is.

SynGate: You're right about the content. I will do my best to improve myself next time...

Just listened to this album again, and it's as good as always. Never been big on Black Metal, but this band slays. Gallery of Fear is too damn awesome to believe it. And The Day When The Sun Faded Away is so great it's not even funny. Catamenia's best album? You bet.

They're probably one of the most consistently excellent symphonic mbm bands in existence (until now?). I'm not too sure about their new album though. It's a little bit of a step out of character for them. There's the usual stuff, and then there's also bits of melodic death and alt. metal with some clean vocals. I really don't know what to think.

To be quite honest, i really don't like this album. It's very weak compared to their older material, especially something like Morning Crimson. The vocals are pretty bad as well. They're much to low and muddy for my tastes.
