Brubeck gets a reputation in the 50s for smooth, west coast jazz--it swings, it's melodic. Desmond is just glorious with that tone and pulling melody after melody out with his improvisational work. But on this album, they go for something more challenging. I can see people expecting another Time Out album wondering what's with all this Time Out There stuff. They never really made another album like this, unfortunately. It's really strong.

A very nice album, great for its time. Brubeck's blues and classical influenced piano-lines in particular are very cool. Still not enough of particular value for me to great this, even if it was very enjoyable.
