Review Summary: Wait, I thought Kurt Cobain died years ago?

In 2005, Michael Pitt starred in the film Last Days which was based loosely (okay, a lot) on Kurt Cobain’s last days of his life. Because of this film, Pitt had a chance to inflict his band Pagoda on the theatre audience and guess who it sounds like? Well done, you guessed it. It’s clear that Pitt idolizes Kurt Cobain. He dresses like him, wears his hair like him and even tries to sing like him. A year on from the movie and Pagoda are signed to Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore’s record label Ecstatic Peace! which is home to other alternative rock acts such as Be Your Own Pet. At this point, Pitt sports Buddy Holly-type glasses and his band hasn’t changed at all.

What the band come out with doesn’t sound terrible but just feels like one long nostalgia trip. Pagoda shine when they try not to sound like Nirvana, “Amego” is probably the least Nirvana-like song here. The bass line is simple and adds a certain groove to the tune and Pitt’s vocals are enjoyable when he strays from that monotone Cobain voice. Aside from parts here and there, the band is a disposable Nirvana wannabe. All songs have quiet verse/loud chorus dynamics, the main riffs are your simple grungy power-chord affair and the vocals all have Cobain traits. I have tried many times to listen to this album for what it is, without comparing it to anything but that’s extremely hard when everything sounds like a bad Nirvana b-side.

The lyrics are usually trite, they are fuelled with angst, loneliness and who can forget the complete nonsensical lyrics? While Cobain’s lyrics were interesting a lot of the time, Pitt’s lyrics are a more dumb-downed version of them. Seriously, who the hell rhymes “amego" with "loco" and "Mexico”? It’s lyrics for kids to listen to, the basic language is easy for them to understand. Though none the less I’ve always said that music is more important than lyrics! Woops, I guessed they are screwed both ways then. I must give them credit somehow, they are a better Nirvana rip-off than a lot of other post-grunge acts. I would rather listen to Pagoda than say, Seether or Puddle of Mudd. And at least they stay true to the ethics and enjoy what they play. But there is also another situation that the band could face, would someone rather listen to them or Nirvana? That’s the problem to a band that have no ideas of their own and just take a style of someone else.

A good listen through the album and it also seems the band run out of steam. The first half of the album is listenable but the second half just drags through thoughts that don’t develop. Plus what’s the deal with Pitt reciting something out of his journal in the fourteen minute snooze fest that is “I Do”? If Pagoda want to go anywhere, they need to realize that the style of music they are playing is outdated, done with and never coming back. Maybe someone that’s just got into Nirvana will like the sounds the band make but for someone already deeply interested in alternative rock, this is a cringe-fest waiting to happen.

Post-grunge, Thurston approved or not, is rarely good. Then again, I guess I was never a grunge fan to begin with.
Nice review, you getting back into it or something?

My buddy is obsessed with this band, sounds like your reviews is pretty accurate considering he's a grunge nut.

Great review. All the Nirvana rip-offs I've heard are horrible, but if you expect anything more from a "rip-off" band it's your own fault.
Is Last Days worth watching?

They sound nothing like Nirvana. In fact, a little better.

Why is it that you guys keep Moaning about waiting for a new grunge band to bring back Grunge and then as soon as a really good one comes up you say there "nirvana rip offs" and grunge is "outdated" its just stupid. If you had any sense you would of realized that Nirvana and Pagoda don't sound anything alike so next time you listen to Pagoda listen with your ears & not your lazy backside! Its people like you that are stopping Grunge from coming back so never in your pathetic little Life say something like that again.

P.S. my friend says;

who the fuck do you think you are to post such a rubbish review like that?? please, sit down on your fucking fatass and listen to nirvana and pagoda, compare them, they are definetly NOT THE SAME!!! most people think pitt wants to be like kurt "because of his look", dude... you must be really stupid! he just looks like kurt in the last days movie! not in real life! and in the film he is ACTING! you know what that means? it is pretending to be someone else, PRETENDING, not being!! pagoda even told in an interview that nirvana is NOT their idol, they don't wanna make the same music like nirvana did! nirvana was a pure grungeband, whereas pagoda is selected as an experimental post grunge band! ...and you complained about their lyrics. are you serious? what's wrong with you?? damn it, please listen to the "top hits" on the radio, people are singing about party, dicks, tits, bitches, alcohol and fucking! these ones are really crappy lyrics without any deep meaning!! but stop insulting pagoda's lyrics just because you're too dumb to understand them!

and one more thing: don't fucking say that grunge is outdated! just because you don't like it! if there would be any kick ass grunge band in this world today, then grunge would rule the world! cause there are still sooo many people who would die for grunge!

So shut the fuck up, don't tell things you don't know anything about! it would be better if you stop talking about music, you seem to be really really untaught! you're just embarassing yourself! what a shame!
