4.5 superb | synk | August 16th 21 | Arai's most impressive early work. The production techniques are a lot more intricate and complex than its predecessors; the precisely-sloppy manipulations of any given instrumental hip-hop style are emphasized ten-fold and harnessed into the glitchiest of Arai's repertoire (at least as of my listening). Especially on "Undulation", Arai completely enters the realm of IDM with his precise choices of cuts, edits, and DSP. It becomes quite obvious what is intended by the record's title Mind Edit. Most every other track implements similar disfigurement to structure, but with more approachable breakbeat presentation, teetering between the biblically turntablist and the underground experimental. "Gyrate" and "Trillion" handle this the best, serving the finest of Arai's bridge between the norm and unprecedented. The only weak moments on the album are the track "Disturbance" which doesn't find its footing till the last few minutes; and the pace-disrupting interlude "Inter" which follows track 1's "Intro" and track 2's "Undulation", putting an unpleasant divide between track 2 and the others, only amplifying their stylistic differences. Overall, this releases represents the best of Arai's early catalogue, offering the matured musicianship and reference to Japan's historical music pantheon (jazz, avant-garde) of Circuit '72 at the returned benefit of Again's grit, space, and unconcern for convention.
