pop artist ruby frost rose to fame when she won mtv 42unheard getting a recording contract. and began opening for acts like kimbra and garbage.
now her icy, catchy and over all strong debut, Volition, Frost has finally got the time and space to do her sound justice. It’s brash, unapologetically poppy, and candy to the ears of those bright young things inhabiting dance floors around the county. Drawing on the less esoteric elements of Björk and the synth cabaret of Lady Gaga, Frost does an admirable job of coalescing her vocal influences into something fresh, authentic and distinctly her.
In many ways it’s what lies beneath the surface layer of production gloss which is really of interest here; under the thickly overlaid tracks and dovetailing harmonies lies a foundation of strong, talented songwriting, which is something that at times gets lost in the mix. Indeed, one of Volition’s most pleasant surprises is the lyrical depth on display, whilst there are certainly enough generalities to satisfy those who just want to dance. On tracks like the simple and frank ballad ‘O What I Had’ and the poignantly self analytical ‘Young’, Frost digs deeper and comes up with narratives which smack of personal, intimate experiences. Contrasting the more heartfelt moments are catchy-as-hell stompers like ‘Water Into Ice’ and the percussive powerhouse ‘Bendigo’ which round out the album and keep things racing along. As a whole it would certainly be nice to hear more deviations from the tried and true chorus-driven format, but it’s a minor quibble when confronted with such a wealth of engaging material.
