Review Summary: A misty sailboat ride through goofy 90's hold music and MS-DOS videogame cheesiness.
Just when you thought vaporwave was gone, a handful of new artists and albums have popped up that aren't practical jokes (It's getting hard to tell). PROGMAN.EXE is the second release from Taiwan-based producer Famicom Fountains, and is a nice trip down memory lane for people who miss sitting in front of a Windows 3.1 computer and trying to connect to America Online 2.0. The opening track "Loading...Please wait" sounds like carribbean MIDI music from the early 90's. I can't tell if it was composed or a sample of something, although most vaporwave tracks are so pitched-down, chopped up, and smothered in reverb and delay it's tough to tell anyways. The second track "tempex.dir" sounds like what you would hear sitting on hold for 3 minutes with your local exterminator. The only recognizable sample here is on "office X-MAS party" which loops the beginning of "Last Christmas" by Wham! over and over until images of liquored-up eggnog, ugly sweaters and 90's office get-togethers make you dizzy and want to nod off. My favorite track on this LP is "影響 [Impact]", which has all the quirkiness and 90's goofiness you could ever wish for. If you like vaporwave, 90's videogames/computer software and MIDI music, then this is for you. Strap on some Reebok Pumps, crack open a ZIMA and give this a listen (Not available on floppy disk until next year).
