Before listening to this album, Caliban really didn't gain my attention. I would hear them every now and then in the car and brushed them off as another mediocre melodic metal band. That was before giving this album a listen.

The first track would intrigue anyone that is into heavy music if you ask me. Pounding riffs and drums bring the album to life as Andy Dorner cries out in passion. This cd really didn't take much to get me pumped up. Then what do you know, clean vocals. Now I'm not really a fan of this most of the time, it just shows when a band is trying to be too versatile or maybe they are caught up in the whole mall metal trend. But hese are just simple vocals; no whine to them at all.

Musically, I think this is an excellent album. The band may have changed their sound over the years, but in my eyes it was for the best. They work the melodies into each song almost flawlessly while keeping a mix of Slayer-esque riffs and obvious Gothenburg sound intact. The album just flows all the way through. You don't find those tracks that drag your finger to the fast forward button on your cd player.

Recommended tracks:
"Beloved and the Hatred"
"My Little Secret"

Anyway, what I wanted to say here was : "I've seen these guys live, they were decent, but nothing amazing"

I'll keep this in mind though, nice review, to the point.

My friends saw them live and said it was amazing, but then again, we don't have the best musical taste in the world.

Sounds interesting. I'll check them out.

What genre would you classify these guys as?

Very short review. Whether that's a compliment or an insult is up to you.

I would say they are melodic metal.

Yeah, haha, I'm not the best with words so I keep it short. As long as I get to the meat I don't see a big problem with it.

Wow, I thought that was a really good review. Short, but interesting and really got the point across. I love this band, and this is a pretty good album.

If your friends are talking about the Chain show... they were indeed amazing.

About the genre...I've heard them classified as deathcore. Not sure if that is accurate but melodic metal would work also.

saw em live , amazing , one guitarist does the singing parts and in sound chekc you can tell his guitar is put waaaay lower then the main guitar who does most of the riffage, i give this album almost 9/10 for originality , calibans been in the metal scene for awhile and havent really gave up on thier heaviness , i mean ya they sing but its either fits realllly well where screams would not or the singing isnt too long , it really bums me out when bands like everytime i die get noticed by their heaviness in thier VERY first recordings *exp ,last night in town, The Burial Plot Bidding war* and totaly sell out into alot mellower sound mainstream record, something caliban has strayed from and remain true to their roots

Caliban are a great metalcore band, they could easily compare to Killswitch but they've got a long way to go. I seriously see them going places. I would give this album anything from a 4.5 to a 4.8. It's not a perfect 5 but it's almost. I bought the undying darkness the other day and that's a whole different story....

This band rules harder than Satan. Just kidding, not quite but good, solid metalcore. Still want to acquire their new album but this is my favorite so far.

ALBUM RATING 3.0
I DO LIKE THE BRIEF moments of atmosphere that pop up and while I absolutely cannot stand his whiney sounding shrieks I do find some of the cleanly sung passages to be memorably executed the best being the single off of the album.Guitairs and riffs are way too generic and repetitive in various songs and seem to make it go by in one long blur instead of a solid structure.
