Review Summary: A tale both mystical and pulverizing, brought to you by Quebec's best.

Put simply, The Realm of Human Illusions is a bloodthirsty, snarling beast that rips and pummels through anything in its path. It must rank among the angriest and cruelest entities to crawl from Canada’s early death metal scene. Every member contributes equally to bring this demon to life, but the absolute inhuman guttural blasts are what set these guys apart from their contemporaries. The vocalist’s lows seem to inject their own portion of bass into the mix. Clocking in at about 26 minutes, it falls just short of being considered a full length – something that Necrotic Mutation was never able to achieve in their brief tenure. And given their ability to effortlessly obliterate, that is just unfortunate.

The group clearly has a knack for writing well-balanced tunes by knowing when to lay down crushing riffs and when to let the atmosphere carry the weight. A rare guitar solo or two prove the guitarists are incredibly talented but also understand when to practice restraint. Most death metal of the era was soaked heavily in themes of violence and gore, but this band preferred to conjure imagery based in mysticism, deception, and magic. It is evident from the artwork, to the song titles, to the peculiar piano soliloquy that closes the curtains. These elements further complement the EP’s enchanting identity and character. But despite best efforts and execution, these songs mostly remain buried in the crypts of Canadian metal history, only to be exhumed by the occasional passerby.

Never heard of these guys but that’s a neat album cover. Also digging the more mystical themes you touched on, I think I’ll give this a spin

I didn’t get to read the review yet but auto pos for writing about a criminally overlooked band.

I've heard of this. It keeps getting recommended as similar to Agony - Apocalyptic Dawning on Discogs. I'll have to check it out
