Review Summary: Ahh-choo!
With summer right around the corner, it’s that time of the year where loads of bands start releasing new music. Everyone gets their summer playlists ready to go and heads out to drive and sing along to their favorite summer tracks with their friends. Just in time for that season comes Sneeze, a Boston based trio that brings their extra fuzzy, grunge infused, garage punk sound to the table. Though released last year, their debut album
I’m Going To Kill Myself has finally seen the light of day on vinyl from Close To Home Records and is ready to be played at high volumes for the summer. For those vinyl heads out there, heads up, this is a record you’ll want to snag if you’re in the mood to jam out at home.
I’m Going To Kill Myself starts off with the track “Intro,” which is self explanatory. It’s an introduction. It starts off with about a minute of dissonance until your ears are met with the fuzzy guitars, punk infused chord progressions, murky production, and vocals/lyrics filled with angst. “Intro” serves its purpose and gets the album going full speed ahead.
I’m Going To Kill Myself does a great job flowing well from track to track. Everything seems to blend really well and has some good transitions from song to song, however, a lot of the album is really repetitive and after a while can get boring, even though it clocks in at only about a half hour. With fifteen tracks you’d think there would be a little more variety besides slowing the tempo here and there. A band with a potential for writing catchy punk hooks is capable of more than that.
I’m Going To Kill Myself isn’t all bad though. At times the tracks are very upbeat and the lyrics very depressing, which is a bit ironic, but it works well.
I’m Going To Kill Myself being their first LP. there is a lot of room for growth. Catchy hooks and some interesting one liners may not be the only thing Sneeze has going for them. Some of the more upbeat and fun tracks will definitely be on some people’s summer playlists and others will be forgotten. More time, effort, and experimentation could be just what Sneeze needs to propel themselves toward more fame and recognition.
