Absolutely stunning work - not quite Haydn's compositional epitaph, but it fulfills the function well. There are elements of early Romantic ideas here - perhaps a sign that Haydn was enjoying what his former pupil Beethoven was doing around this time - and the bombastic fire of the orchestration damn near puts to shame even the loudest moments of Haydn's symphonies. A mainstay of the oratorio repertoire, a defining moment in the genre's history, and for very good reason.

1795. This piece does have a certain quality that makes it feel like it's bringing about something significant. Especially toward the beginning (probably as it should be).

My favourite piece of classical music. Glorious from beginning to end, incredible atmosphere and huge choirs. Pure genius
