Review Summary: It's good, not great. But regardless its fun.
The XXX Canadian electro-queen, also known as Peaches, was at one point a music teacher, spending her free time masturbating and making beats while locked in her bedroom. Her first album The Teaches of Peaches was a repetitive, yet catchy combo of simple beats and sexual lyrics. Her follow up album, the uniquely named, Father***er is essentially the same thing, just with a more punk rock and flavorful edge. Clearly, Father***er is superior to The Teaches of Peaches even though the style is not changed dramatically. A sign of a good recording artist is that with each album you grow as an artist and produce even better material each round. Peaches defiantly makes the transition from Teaches to ***er. No pun intended.
The opening track to Father***er is called
I Don’t Give a…, which as the title would suggest an edited sample of Joan Jetts, Bad Reputation, with extra lyrics by Peaches added. Considering it is only about 40% of Peaches singing it’s pretty hard to judge her musical ability thus far, although the song is a great example of the sound of the rest of the album. After the two monotone songs
I’m The Kinda and
I U She. (The first of which is basically about being a bitch, and the latter which is about Peaches open bisexuality, and having a threesome). Three songs into the album, there is still a fair amount of sexual lyrics as heard in The Teaches of Peaches, but not an overwhelming amount.
Somehow, someway Peaches was able to collaborate with punk legend Iggy Pop to create the next song
Kick It. This song consists of Peaches and Iggy arguing back and forth with each other, building into the chorus “Tear it up, rip it up, kick it up! Kick it, Kick it, Kick it!” A total punk influenced song with a hint of Peaches sexuality, but losing the electro flair. Thus creating a great single for the album, and defiantly a better (if not the best) song on the album. Another punk rock-influenced song is
Operate the verses are quietly sang, but with a heavy beat in the back, leading into the highly repetitive chorus “He’s not dead, He’s gonna live, I see his eyes rolling back in his head!” Somewhat similar to
Kick It, just without Iggy.
So far in the album is pretty great from what you might expect from Peaches, but the album does begin to go downhill about halfway in. For example the song
Rock n’ Roll consists of Peaches screaming “Rock N’ Roll, rocknroll, rock n’ ROOOOLLLLL!” literally through 95% of the song. It’s by far the worst song on the album, and she obviously didn’t try very hard on this one. Then the slow and creepy/sexual
Stuff Me Up. It’s exactly what you think it’s about too. Not a very flattering song. The album ends on a good note though with
Bag It, I’m not quite sure what this song is about, but it’s a very toned down punk song, almost with a kick of Patti Smith, if we’re using punk legends for examples.
Overall Father***er is what one might expect from an album called Father***er. Think of it like The Teaches of Peaches, wrapped in a punk rock flavored tortilla shell. With songs like
Kick It and
Operate being the spicy beef stuffing, and
Rock n’ Roll being the flies that died in the beef during packaging. Basically creating an enchilada from Taco Bell, it looks good, you want it to taste good, some bites are good, but others are cold and squishy from mashed fly guts.
