Has its issues, and is very derivative off of Iron Maiden especially, but shows enough peomise to stand out on its own right. The twchnical passages added which shine on tracks like Shadowfax are really cool, but overall the entire album is basically a Maiden eip-iff.

I do get why people don?t like this record. The production is awful and the music itself is strongly influenced by Iron Maiden. But Fates Warning take those influences and kind of do their own thing by infusing more technicality. Just listen to the titeltrack or the instrumental Shadowfax, where Fates Warning do really show their technical abilities. Damnation is an epic ballad that probably suffers the bad sound the most of all the songs on the album. The awesome live version played on Awaken The Guardian- Live shall be proof. Night on Brocken offers a number of exciting tracks like Buried alive, Kiss of death, Misfit and the excellent closing track Soldier boy, but you will also find weaker ones like The calling and S.E.K., that is also an instrumental with beautiful melodies that are disturbed by a free swinging open string. This may happen intenionally, it?s still annoying.rOverall the debut of Fates Warning is great fun to listen to, although it?s not Progressive Metal yet. Vocalist John Arch does a great job on here, but he still is not the god he became with the next albums.

Fates Warning's debut album written long before Frank Aresti, Mark Zonder or Ray Alder were in the band. It is a rough representation of what they would become by the release of "Awaken the Guardian". This has its proggy moments but is more entrenched in the metal of the time. Its a good album if you're looking for old school metal, and the song "Damnation" is almost worth getting the album for all by itself.
