Review Summary: Chris Tomlin churns out part 4 of his first album...
No matter what genre of music you make, an artist needs to try new things. Imagine if [/L]Elvis Presley[/L] never tried out the then new form of rock in his music? Rock would probably not even exist. So, it only stands to reason that you expect an artist to put variety in their music; experiment. One of the biggest reasons I dislike pop so much is because, with the exception of a few artists, they all sound the same. If one does sound different, they keep putting out the same album with different titles.
The Christian Music community is especially bad about this. An over-abundance of artists that never try new things is present. Building 429, Steven Curtis Chapman, Mandisa... just to name a few. And Chris Tomlin this the worst of them all. This is his 4th album and not much has changed since he got popular.
This album sounds so similar all the way through. It's all praise oriented, unoriginal lyrics, with the regular pop instrumental synths over top. The album isn't unlistenable, but it's nothing that is worth listening to if you want something decent and varied.
He can sing, however. Although it feels like auto-tuned, I can still hear a definable ability to sing. Too bad he's not using it.
Burning Lights is another album to add to the enormous repertoire of painfully generic Christian pop. Nothing to make you interested causes this album to flop.
