I am disillusioned; and philosophical; once again.
I kept experiencing this recurring sense of dread about Otep, and I couldn't seem to figure out why. Anyway, with some hindsight involved, I finally got myself to express what I felt in words lol.
Also serving as my uh reason why I won't do this OTEP thing again. Simply because if you won't change, don't expect anyone else to. I don't know what else I can say really.
(note to self: june 1 2023: don't write things about things when you're jaded)

Noooo I love Otep. Her vocals are incredible, her lyrics are thought provoking and expressive. It’s crazy shit cause it’s nu-metal lol. That being said, this isn’t my favourite Otep release, the low rating isn’t surprising. Thanks for covering Otep. Good review!

I can't deny vocals, definitely not, but also you can't deny lacking artistic substance.
I also hate formularicness. Even if the lyrics are original and weird, Otep Shamaya is, or I guess got to be, pretty formularic, So I guess this is part retrospective, part something else.

Yeah, Otep never changed her formula much. Generation Doom was wildly different from her usual stuff but generally she plays by her book. She knows what she likes and it’s usually solid. It’s respectable that she kept up with the nu-metal stuff through the years.

Otep was probably my first nu-metal band, and opened my eyes to the beauty of unique music.

Nice review Stigma, I'm on the side of disliking Otep. Her style feels very phoned in half the time and while I've only heard a couple songs off this record, her last few records are all trash.

...which is exactly why The Ascension is Otep's best. Because it has plenty of well places variation to keep things interesting, as well as the fact it has less pointless growling. It feels less phoned in that way.
Variation and growling is a problems some of her album's face more than others, this included. Atavist sucks because over time, Otep's growling abilities have declined substantially, and that album is a dedicated growling album. Which spells inevitable disaster.
Also I like to ramble because I love philosophy
