nice review, and this is better served without a track by track! Thanks for doing it! I want to pick this up, but wasn't sure how good it was going to be.
you've convinced me though, and I will definatley be picking it up!
EDIT: So I picked it up today, and I've got to say I'm definatley more than impressed!!!
I think I still prefer Battle of Mexico City, but Cypress Hill coming out for the performance of How I Could Just Kill a Man, made me want to get up and dance.
I felt like singing along all the way through, adn there was never a dull moment!
4.5/5 for me!!!

I was gonna do a review of my own until I saw that you beat me to it, so I'll just say what I was gonna say here.
I was really surprised at the pricetag on this one...I picked it up for about the price of a CD at Best Buy (12 bucks). The sound quality is admittedly not incredible on the main show-Brad's bass drum is rather weak, although that's more the fault of the recording process than the drum itself, I'm sure it sounded great there. It looks like the show was recorded indoors, so that may have been a factor.
The convention show sounded great, though...I really love the way his snare ended up sounding on that recording. The DVD over-all has a very raw feel to it, as if they didn't mess with it too much, electing instead to leave the show as it was, which I see as a good thing. The member who impressed me the most (in relation to my already positive opinions of the band) was bassist Tim Commerford (or "Y Tim K," as he was affectionately known at the time of the performance). The man is solid as a brick, and you can really tell by this performance. He really provides a very strong back-bone for the other members to work around, keeping his lines much simpler than he clearly can play but still interesting. You can really tell on tracks that rely heavily on the bass to drive them; a great example would be the band's performances of "No Shelter" and "Sleep Now In the Fire."
I enjoyed the improvisational and "jam" feel of Rage's show. All of Tom's solos are improvised, and many of Brad's fills were as well.
No energy was lost in Zach's vocals between the record and CD; if anything, he is more explosive live. De La Rocha gets alot of criticism for not singing; personally, I find it admirable that he is honest in this regard, instead of the loads of punk/rock artists that try to pass themselves off and use "studio magic" to make it seem like they can sing when in actuality they're terrible. The fact is, De La Rocha is an incredibly intelligent man with alot of ideas and strong opinions, and the medium with which he chose to express himself was music. He is an extremely talented rapper and incredible lyricist, highly underrated in my opinion.
Brad has a very loose feel to his drumming. Some of the more subtle intrincancies of his playing unfortunatly did not transfer perfectly to the live show, such as his use of accent patterns and ghost notes(You couldn't hear 'em most of the time), however he still was able to provide the right feel for each song. He really grooves very well, and one humorous thing about him is that he doesn't LOOK like he's grooving like he does (like Bonham in a way...he's actually said that very thing about Bonzo in interviews before). He's really got the punk/metal appearance down, but his feel is more funk-based.
Ratings are stupid, so I'm not going to give one. I enjoy the DVD, and it's worth a hell of alot more than 12 bucks. BUY IT! :p

you said it man, timmy c's tone is just MASSIVE on this disc - ive never heard bass played so authoritatively. this disc should catapult him to the level of respect he deserves....but it probably won't.
all of tom's solo's were improvised? i dont think so - born of a broken man, testify, no shelter, etc.- id say at least half the disc are the same solos as the orginal studio versions.

oh, almost forgot my major quarrel with the disc:
no widescreen viewing?! what kind of cameras where used to shoot this? its very strange and unexpected.
|
| |
It was shot for VCR release originally the preformance so that could be why.
|
| |
you sure? the BOMC DVD was shot before this was, so why wouldnt they keep the format in mind?
|
| |
I went to their official Epic site and that's what they commented. They were shooting this footage for a video. I don't know much about cameras but I would suspect that's why.

The CD is far better in my opinoin. I hate the way it was edited with all those crazy camera angle changes, its worse than a rap video at some points. And Zack it a bit sloppy on the dvd, I hate the way he sang the chorus to Bombtrack. Despite that, there are some tracls that really stick out and make it all worth while, and it's worth buying just for the National Democratic Convention performance IMO.
DVD rating: 8/10
CD rating: 10/10

RATE IT OUT OF 5
is it that hard to comprehend?
you sure? the BOMC DVD was shot before this was, so why wouldnt they keep the format in mind?
Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium was their last and final concert as Rage Against the Machine.
so I am 100% sure that this was shot after BOMC.
|
| |
That's nice, I am 100% sure that BOMC was shot before this was.
|
| |
I read that wrong...I thought you were asking if the BOMC DVD was shot before this
me=dumbass on that 1
I thoought it said
"you sure the BOMC dvd was shot before this?"
|
| |
heh, yea, thats what i figured- its easy to mess up.
|
| |
this is the best music DVD ive ever seen
|

Album Rating: 4.5
BOMC was a example of how NOT to use the widescreen process, most of the time Tom's head was only half visible and Zach's head too etc etc. Plus all that slow mo crap and stuff really took the "raw" factor out of this. I still enjoy the first RATM DVD but the Live at the Olympic Grand Auditorium DVD is very close to being one of the best I have seen
Rating 4.999/5 or 5/5 for the rest of you :thumb:
