Review Summary: Embrace the daydreaming days and a 16-bit moon in introspect.
Think back to the time of childhood joy. Times of excitement. Times of fear. Was the world of commonplace routines too small for the vast cosmos of dreams inside your head? Sometimes I think it would do us all good to delve into daydreaming daze and connect with the very familiar sense of jollity and enthusiasm that we all kind of lost somewhere along the way. Perhaps you’ve come to the right place. Perhaps you need to let go of your grownup integrity, if only just for a little while. The small things mattered, I bet you fought the dungeon boss with great eagerness! Wanna go for a ride in space?
The core of Dinosaurs on Fire is tied in with a fancy Berlin school-esque soundscape and traces of odd experimentation. To little surprise, seeing as this is an electronic record. It’s in all respects a well written piece of art, but how do you justly distinguish good from bad in a genre of this sort? When listening to trancelike music as such, I think it’s important to pay attention to the right elements. Without supplementary substances (!) perhaps it’s easier said than done but I seem to register a similarity to post-rock and classical music among others, in which the music takes shape with bombastic climaxes that discharges in meek ambient sections. This exciting structure makes for an interesting listen. What mainly spurs my interest for
Sleep Moon Voyage though, is its deep sense of youthful autonomy and simple yet diverse façade. Smell the flower of transcendency; listen for patterns, phrases and get lost within your mind - let it wander in harmony with a hypnotic beat.
I have a soft spot for pompous music. I’m not at all surprised to see I’m allured by Dinosaurs on Fire. And every so often electronic music can seem droning and monotonous in character, which is definitely not the case on this particular record. Engaging melodies coalesce with stimulating rhythms and creative songwriting. The album shines with colour, integrity and strong presence. And sometimes it’s hard to decide whether or not what I’m listening to is meant stir an eerie or uplifting emotion.
Thrilling would be the best way to describe it.
In short, the appeal depends on the fact that Dinosaurs on Fire are so very accessible, much because of the music's wuthering and distinct atmosphere. The sound is tinged by a bold variety of effects and impressions; beautiful, slightly childish and very seductive. Most people find pleasure in strong melodies, enchanting crescendos and fine contrast - therefore I think anyone who doesn’t take themselves too seriously should be able to appreciate this. Sleep Moon Voyage and its playful charm.
