Review Summary: A glimpse into what was to come.
Imperial Triumphant is a band that has taken the metal world by storm in recent years. Their unique way of mixing extremely dissonant and insanely technical black metal with soothing jazz and ambient bits is something that had not been done previously, or at least not done very well. This is their very first EP,
Obeisance, it's not what newer fans of the band are used to.
Obeisance is way more raw and more "trve" black metal sounding than what many have come to expect. This is, in no way, a negative thing. Imperial Triumphant blow you away with dirty, raw black metal with subpar production, lightning fast buzzsaw trems and shrieked vocals from the pits of Satan's bowels. And while this is going on, they implement classical violin into this black metal frenzy. You can tell, while this is nowhere near as jazzy or experimental as later releases, that the men of Imperial Triumphant have always had that aspect in them.
This short, 6 song EP isn't as grandiose as their full lengths or later EPs, but one thing it doesn't lack is intensity.
Obeisance isn't their magnum opus or even close, but if you're in the mood for some face ***ing raw black metal, this will do you just fine.
