I remember purchasing this album a while back from eBay, under the impression that Aaron from My Dying Bride was musically involved. Turns out, he was just the album cover artist (and what a great job he did). Anyway, it has been a while since I have listened to Promise You, and I decided to refresh my memory, as well as give this unknown band a little well deserved publicity. The first track is no doubt the weakest on the disc, starting off with a very happy, late 90's Paradise Lost sounding riff. The album only gets better from there, as it becomes a little darker. Stand out tracks are To Live or Die and Reflections. The closing track, A Day From You, returns to the major key joyful feel that began the disc, yet concludes with an incredible, emotional ending. As a whole, this is a solid album. The guitar work is very good, solid bass lines, and male vocals that range from haunting spoken word passages to brutal death metal growls. The only drawbacks on Promise You are the flat female vocals and the drumming, which is pretty good, but very repetitive and uneventful. The tempo on Promise You rarely changes, which makes it a little more like a gothic rather than a metal band. Fans of mid 90's Paradise Lost, Anathema, and Katatonia would surely like this, but I can't help but think it could have been better.
