Review Summary: Who said Grunge ever died?

Sometimes I wonder if Australian rock ever really moved on from the Grunge movement. Sure there's no straight up grunge bands emerging from down under but somehow elements of the genre have had a way of sneaking into our rock music year in, year out.

The latest example of this trend comes from indie rockers Emperors, whom up until a couple months ago were just a small band with a loyal little following from Perth, Australia. However thanks to the dudes at Triple J unearthed, the band is now garnering some well deserved success off the back of their debut record, Stay Frosty; a short, gritty and melody infused effort that if you didn't know any better, sounds like it could have been released in '96. While at some points the songs can blend together or sound somewhat samey, the record does not falter too much because of it, simply due to the fact that nearly every song on here is catchy and fun. Production on Stay Frosty suits the bands sound with it not being over polished although at times it could definitely benefit from some polishing.

All in all Stay Frosty is a great new album from a band well deserving of their recent success and who seem to be enjoying every moment of it. Pick this up, give it a listen on Spotify, buy it from their website, either way don't look this one over.

I wonder if the title is a play on words with the Norwegian black metal movement, which has both a band called Emperor and a musician called Frost.
