Review Summary: A nice change in direction, Short but sweet.

Chelsea Grin is a band I've only discovered recently but I'm already digging. I've already listened to their Self-Titled EP and both of their full lengths and thoroughly enjoyed them. But one thing that I noticed was that they didn't change much musically. Both records sounded alike each other with only slight differences in their style. But I'm happy to say that their newest release Evolve is Chelsea Grin's big change as a band and it does not disappoint.

First off the guitar work is much more melodic thanks to their new guitarist Jason Richardson (Formerly of Born Of Osiris) and he is probably the best thing to happen to this band. In fact the guitar work sounds a lot like Born Of Osiris which is a very good thing since BOO is quite possibly one of the best Deathcore bands out there. It definitely makes the release more fun to listen to than their past releases.

Alex Koehler's vocals haven't changed too much since My Damnation but they're still pretty damn good. His screams sound very dark, almost like someone being tortured which is very fitting considering that this is a Deathcore band and the subject matters on the album are very dark. His clean vocals on the other hand do need some work, sounding quite bland but not bad enough to ruin any of the songs.

There isn't a lot of bad things I can really say about Evolve. Really the only bad thing I can say is that it feels too short being only five tracks long. It really gets you into the mood but then when the last track "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is over it makes you say "wait... that's it?" It really makes you wish that it was a full length.

Overall though Chelsea Grin's fourth studio release is a very good effort and without a doubt the band's best release to date. And my personal favorite release of the year so far.

Even with the talent of Jason Richardson, Chelsea Grin falls into a category of boring mediocrity al...

Chelsea Grin is going nowhere fast and Evolve proves it....

Chelsea Grin have made an obvious change in direction, but which direction are they headed?...

A surprising turn for what was a pretty generic Deathcore band. Still could use some improvements....

pretty good review, these guys are from my hometown and just saw them yesterday at Warped Tour. they only played 3 songs because of tech issues, but they have improved a lot except the clean vocals are terrible. they also rehearse at the same building that my band does.

The guitar work from the preview sounded decent because he's ex BoO but I bet this sucks

Don't dis it until you listen to it. Don't just type a pointless comment saying "probably shit". Don't get me wrong I don't have any problem with you guys voicing your opinion's on my review even if you strongly disagree but if you're just gonna type some stupid ass pointless comment saying shit band and not giving any logical reasoning behind it then don't even waste your time, and also don't down mark my review just cause you don't agree with the score I give it.

i'm on the fence on this one. some of the vocals are really fucking atrocious, though i've never had that much of a problem with koehler. if anything, most of the time, his vocals are pretty amusing. plus there are some pretty killer leads on this.

it's just too bad jr's not gonna be on the next boo album

Vocals are lolbad. Band is really horrible. I haven't heard this whole album but Lilith was more than enough to get me to stay clear of the band forever.

Lilith was somehow worse than anything they had ever done beforehand, which is quite an achievement.

Lilith wasn't good by Deathcore standards, can't imagine the rest of this is much better. The way the review is written seems like you're pretty new to the whole Deathcore genre... Chelsea Grin are bottom of the barrel.
