This is the only Shadows Fall album I own, and it's amazing. I've seen their drummer on the Modern Drummer 2005 festival, which is what led me to buy the CD.
I'd like to know, whats better, their older stuff, or the new stuff, and why?

The Art of Balance is definately their best. It has everything you want from a metal band on that cd. If you were to get anything from them, get that. Of One Blood would be next.

This stuff still manages to completly blow me away with every listen. My favourites- The light that blinds and Power of I and I.

I had heard and read some very positive things about this band when I bought this album, and cannot stand to listen to it. The mixing gives it a sound that, literally, turns my stomach.

I agree as always mudvaynian. Also after listening to this album again its starting to get boring to me. They are definetly not the best American band in metal that title is held by KSE. Even though I like ATR the best KSE have found the formula that works and are amazing live. Brian needs to improve on vocals then we'll talk.

This album would be 100x better, if there was only one track of screaming. I hate the layering of them.

If you like the first song then check out the rest of the album, but I prefer The Art of Balance and Of One Blood.

great band instrumentally, but the vocals are so terrible that it gets very annoying fast. plus this release is their most toned down release and it sounds not so great. i loved when they did death metal with phillip labonte even with the shitty production on sombre eyes to the sky. of one blood is a classic and their best work yet. the art of balance is way better than this album in every department. guitar solos, drumming especially, and the vocals were so much better too. this is still a decent album, but musicianship and vocally it is not as good as previous releases. fallout from the war is even shittier. i don't expect much from their newest album that will be out sometime this year. if it sounds anything like fallout from the war then i will burn it.

This is pretty good imo. One of the better NWOAHM bands easily.

Definitely one of my favorite albums that i own... I remember i bought this cd because i wanted to hear a new band, something i had never heard before... some kid walked by wearing a shadows fall shirt, and i remembered hearing a lot of good things about the band so i picked up this cd... and i still love it to this day... What Drives the Weak = my fav. song off the album. This Message Edited On 02.07.07

Some of the songs on this record are pretty sloppy, but I really love the execution on the bass (it does more than just follow the rhythm guitar!), and the solos are definitely a strong highlight. Brian's vocals can get a little annoying, too...
The post-acoustic intro riff to "The Light That Blinds" is beyond awesome, too.

Few standout songs, notably opening and closing tracks. But The Art of Balance ftw.

I think the vocals are Shadows Fall's weak spot, but I like them a lot anyways, you just have to get used to them
