Emo keeps you up to date with current events, like cute monkeys.

"
Saying this is emo is a bit of a stretch. The vocals are never screamed or yelled and the music is pretty soft and slow and never resembles any hardcore type of music. I don't think the guitars use distortion once on this album. Mineral and E!E!(who is also higly influenced by Mineral) are the only emo bands this kind of reminds me of. "

I wholeheartedly agree with this.

And..."i never said that this was a full-fledged "emo record" but you said it doesnt contain emo elements and thats flat out wrong"
He didn't say that...

But it's very true that this album - which is seen as one of the landmarks in the emo scene - isn't all that much emo at all. Basically the bands that preceded AF like Cap 'n Jazz and Joan Of Arc already hinted at some stylistic features of this band. Like the much adored twinkling guitars nowadays (which was not an emo characteristic to begin with) which are nowadays blown out of proportion in modern bands, hence 'twinkle daddies' and what not. The one major emo element it has (as have lots of ordinary indie rock bands) are the introspective lyrics. But given the history of the Kinsella brothers and their wonderful sense of dynamics (Mike particularly) made its influence quite apparent. This band's link with previous as well as future emo acts have got it labeled as an emo album as the overlapping term. It would however be more suited with just the indie label - heck, even math rock would apply- followed with a subgenre that is emo. Every person who's done his in-dept research will to some extent agree with this.
